Blank CD-R not seen by the DVD-RW

The DVD-RW plays everything fine, but when a disk is inserted to be burned
the message is "insert disk" or "incorrect function." Is this a problem with
XP or do I need some additional burning software?

First off are you certain you are inserting a CD-R and not a DVD-R? XP can
not natively burn DVDs and will issue the error you are seeing. You will
need third party software to burn DVDs. However XP can natively burn CDs. If
you are certain you are using a blank CD-R then right click the DVD-RW drive
icon and select Properties. Click the Recording Tab and ensure the box to
enable recording on this device is checked. But as this is a DVD device you
may as well get third party software to take advantage of DVD writing.

Also, mileage may differ, but I find DVD-R to be a very unreliable format.
DVD+R is better.

Deepburner Free will burn DVDs.

I had a similar problem.

I had the CD writer upgraded to (replaced with) a DVD writer, on my PC.

I had successfully burnt music tracks to TDK blank CDs using the CD writer
but could not burn to these TDK blank CDs using the DVD writer.

I was told the problem was that the TDK blank CDs only worked with older CD
writers, not newer DVD and CD writers.

I bought different (non TDK) blank CDs and successfully burnt music CDs to
these (non TDK) blank CDs using the DVD writer.

So maybe your problem is due to the blank CDs you are using.

I hope this helps.
