Black squares

My XP Home worked perfectly until recently when I noted that I have small
blank black squares on my screen. It usually occurs when I open Outlook
Express or Word 2000 and this black square locates itself in the top right
hand corner where the red X (for clicking to close) is. When i move my mouse
arrow to it, the red X appears.

Not only that, I note that on occassions when I shut down windows, the black
square (about an inch square) appears on the screen until shut down.

Is this a sign of creeping corruption or invasion of some undetectable
spyware? I use Adaware 6.0 regularly along with registry cleaner - I can't
find anything to date. Can anyone help or suggest something?

Is it some of your Icons turning black? U could have a corrupt IconCacheFile.

Easiest is to right click desktop and select Properties and then SETTINGS and then change
your Color Quality to another setting (if U are on 32 Bit, go to 16 bit or vice versa) and
then click out of there. Then go back and change it back again. This re-writes the
IconCacheFile and solves a Black or corrupt Icon problem.

Interesting suggestion. I will do as you say and see if it works. If the
file you mentioned is corrupt, how can this be?

Ah, the mysteries of "Why did it do that". <smile>

Who knows, sudden shut-down and unable to re-write. Wonky install from another program??

I burnt a Video disk yesterday and all my desktop icons went black, when I tried to run the
disk to check it burnt OK.

The fix below did the trick.

Sometimes Icons end up with different pictures than you are used to, this is sure sign the
IconCacheFile has corrupted.

Did what you suggested. Black squares have disappeared. Let's hope its
forever!
Before your suggestion, I was seriously thinking of repairing the Windows
Home XP...

Thanks

They have now returned on my screen. Is there any other way of eliminating
these black squares that block off my red shut program icons?
