Black Screen

Hi All,

I have a problem with my sons machine: we switch the machine on and we get
the options Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking etc. ALL the options have
been tried even the option Start Windows from last good known configuration,
but we still get a black screen with a white cursor and nothing else. We see
the windows logo on boot up and that is it.

I have attempted to recover with an ERD but still get no joy. I dont really
want to rebuild the machine. Can anyone help me?

Kind Regards.

Try booting from the XP CD and choose the SECOND "R" option. The first one
would take you to the Recovery Console; you dont' want that. You want the
Repair Install option which comes next.
In theory you won't lose any data, but ... those are famous last words.
It's also somewhat possible you might not have that second R option in
which case, this method can't work for your apparent level of expertise.

Always back up your data first, before doing anything that messes with the
operating system.

Thanks all.

I will attempt to recover from the R option. If that is not possible then i
will rebuild the machine.

The last time I saw this was when a game corrupted my video drivers, had to
get into safe mode remove and reinstall the drivers for my card. Seems to me
I have heard of this with Nvidia cards. I would try and see if you can get
windows to install and use the generic VGA video driver and see if that
corrects it

Hi Greatwhite,

Thanx for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately i have attempted to get
into safe mode but only get the 4 safe mode text at each corner of the screen
but still get a black screen. I cannot see any options that would allow me to
reinstall the video card drivers. Is there anything else i can try before
rebuilding the machine?

regards.
