Black screen

On my XP machine it boots into the desktop screen but
only part the icons appear. If I touch the mouse or a key
on the keyboard the screen goes black and the machine
there is hard drive activity as if it going through the
last stages of the boot precess again and back to the
desktop. Every 15 seconds after that it keeps going black.
I did run the blaster virus fix in safe mode and it found
no virus.

what happens in safe mode?
Have you updated your video driver?
Have you updated motherboard BIOS?
