black screen on startup

I am running a compact laptop and whenever i try to start it up it just goes
to the black screen. I cannot even get it to start in safe mode. Would be
grateful for any help. Dont have any discs as it came all preinstalled

Compaq gave you the option to make a set of restore disks when you got it. To bad you did not read
the manual and do this task before it became too late.
Try www.restoredisks.com to see if you can buy a set for this model.

Since HP bought Compaq, try getting the recovery CDs from HP. Cost is
around $20 to $30.

This sounds like a bios battery issue...what needs to happen is you
need to findout where your bios battery (usually on the other side of
the battery that you have to charge) and they cost about $10 to $20
bucks at your local hardware store. Another thing that might be going
on is your hardrive failed to start when your computer booted up. If
this is the case you will probably have to look into buying a new
laptop!!

I went into the setup menu and tried to do a hardrive test that should have
taken 54 minutes, but after 1 minute it said that it had failed
