Black Screen in XP

I have two situations where I see my monitor go to a black screen for a few
seconds and then the screen comes back and everything is ok. Both
situations deal with Microsoft software, and everything seems to be updated
concerning my video card. What could be causing this. The two situations
this occurs in are:

When I boot the computer and it loads Microsoft Time Zone utility. The
screen goes black for a few seconds. I uninstalled the utility and the
problem went away.

When I start Visual Studio 2008 the screen goes black for a few seconds
after the splash screen. This I can't uninstall since I need to use it.

Has anyone else seen problems like this? Any ideas on how it could be
fixed?

Open event viewer & get specific details when the software failed.More than
likely they use alot of pc resources,usually memory,try system info,advanced,
performance,page file,set to "let system manage" click set 2X,close out.
