Black screen in .MPG files

M

Mark Veldhuis

Hello,

All of a sudden, Windows Media Player 9 refuses to play some MPG files.
As far as I can see, the problem occurs with MPEG-2 files.
When I want to play them, I briefly see "connecting" in the lower left
corner, which then changes to "playing", alternating with the name of
the playlist. The WMP window also changes to the size of the MPG and
shows the total time of the movie, so apperantly WMP is able to get some
info from the file.
The 'progress bar" or "search bar" (or whatever it is called in the
English version, mine's Dutch) does not move. There's no sound, no
video.

As I said, this started all of a sudden. I have been able to see these
movies prefectly fine before, and I made no changes to my system after I
last saw them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards,
Mark Veldhuis.

Hi,

suggestion: download the wmp9 codec pack again.

Worth trying, but unfortunately it did not help. :(
Any other ideas? This drives me nuts, especially since they used to play
fine and nothing has changed on my system since I last played them...

Kind regards,
Mark Veldhuis.

I am having a similar problem. I also use Windows Media Player 9. I have a number of downloaded .wmv and .mpeg files and they played just fine, both the video and accompanied sound. Suddenly a file I downloaded would play back the sound but not the video. Also in troubleshooting I tried to view other files that had previously played ok and they wil not show the video (black screen). In all cases the sound plays okay

I followed the troubleshooting guide for playback in WMP for Windows XP Had the same problem when trying to playback in mplayer2. Also ran the DiretX diagnostics. This test seems to work fine since all DirectX displays were as expected.

Well, I used to have the same problem with mpeg-2's. That was after switching from win2k to winxp. But then I installed Ace Mega Codec Pack - Pro XP, and I was able to play them back again. But I never got to know the name of the missing codec. I probably think a codec in your system would have got overwritten or deleted in someway (just a guess though).

I was finally able to correct my problem. I downloaded the WMP 9 program and re-installed it. After I rebooted my computer, all was fine again. Leave a message if this fixes things for you.

I can try that, but what will happen to the updates I got from Windows
Update (I think there were some WMP updates, right?). Will they be
included in the WMP setup file I download from the MS site?

Mark:

I don't believe it will be a problem. After I re-installed the WMP application I checked for updates and found none applicable. If you go to "Windows Updates", you can scan for updates and download what you want.

In the past, I had an occasion where I had to re-install Windows XP from scratch. Afterward, I went back and downloaded Service packs and other updates.

In the end, WMP isn't working for you so what do you have to lose??

Well, it works for everything, except MPEG-2 files. So I might break
more than I fix.
But I'm gonna try it anyway, sounds like something that might fix the
problem. I'll let you know if it did. :)

I just reinstalled WMP9. Unfortunately, this did not fix the problem. :(
I'm still hoping for a solution, as this gets very annoying.
Every program on my PC (video editors and such) can play MPEG-2, except
Windows Media Player. And that's what I always use for watching movie
files, switching to other software is no solution here. ;-)

FYI, it seems that Winamp also does not want to play the movies.
They play fine in PowerDVD, Magix VideoDeluxe and Pinnacle Studio 8.

I have one more suggestion. This procedure assumes you are running Windows XP as an operation system

Open your Windows Media Player. Select the Tools menu; then Options
With Options open you will see a "Devices" tab at the top
Left click the tab and you will see a list of file types. Make sure the box for "movie files (mpeg) is checked

If this isn't the problem you may want to go directly to Microsoft Support

Good Luck!

I've had this same problem as well, but mine will play roughly half of a movie and then video goes black while sound continues. Very frustrating. Probably a m$ trap to sucker users into paying for their bs tech support. Screw them, I'm switching software.

I hate you Bill and hope you, your family and your closest friends die soon

I had this problem, I fixed it (for wmp9, but not 6.4) by changing the performance levels in the wmp9 options.

Mark,

You've probably installed a new codec without even knowing it. Perhaps
because you've installed a new player.
Try finding a good codec pack on the net: 'Nemo' for instance. This installs
new and fresh codecs on the system and replaces old ones.
Hope this helps.

With kind regards,

Rob Vermeulen
