black screen hangups

When I start Windows XP, the computer appears to stop
responding (hang) with an empty, black screen immediately
after the windows logo and loading screen.... until
eventually the logon window appears

That screen is where some of the hardware devices and internet connections are established. It's likely the connection to your
internet service provider that causes the extended delay but leaving a zip drive empty can cause a delay as well as windows looks
for files on that drive and it fails to respond (it times out after a while allowing the startup to proceed but the delay is long).

Also note that some programs that make backups of files scan the hard drive for new files and updated files at that point ... are
you running any programs of that nature on the system?
