Bizarre problem with attachments and Windows Mail

T

Tim W

I've never had this problem until now. I've sent some emails from work to
home with attachments. I receive the emails, but the attachments are
missing. There's no indication that Windows Mail has blocked anything, and
I don't have anti-virus on my computer. Further, I know that the
attachments were sent and received by my ISP since I can access my email
account with GMail, and retrieve the attachments that way. For some reason,
Windows Mail is not receiving the attachments, even though I know they're
there to be received. I'm using pop email, and the attachments can be
anything, pdf, Word, etc. Any ideas?

If the mail was sent from Outlook using Outlook's RTF format then WinMail
will never find the attachment. WinMail does not understand Outlook's RTF
format. Ask the Outlook user to please use Plain Text, especially when
sending attachments.

I have my Outlook to send in plan text only, so I don't think that's the
problem. Any other ideas?

More interesting facts. The size of the email suggests that the attachment
is there. For example, the email that should have the attachment (but
doesn't) is 96KB. If I send the same email without the attachment, the size
is 8KB. Also, in the properties for the email that should have the
attachment, it says "X-MS-Has-Attach: yes".

Look at the source code of that received message (Ctrl+F3).
Does it refer to "content type application/ms-tnef" or does it refer
to a file named Winmail.dat? If so, see

Yes, the source code does reference ms-tnef and Winmail.dat. I looked at
the articles and followed the instructions and I still get no attachments.
As I understand it, there are 3 places in Outlook 2007 that control this
behaviour, the Mail Format tab, the Internet Format button, and the setting
in the individual contact. All are set to plain text. There must be
something else that's overriding these settings. I didn't have this problem
just 2 days ago.

You should probably consult one of the Outlook newsgroups.
From what little I know about Outlook, there are Exchange server
settings that override individual Outlook client settings.

If you're certain that you sent in plain text then your Exchabe server is
set to change it to RTF.

Just a silly question because I thought I had the same problem.
I had OL 2002 (and others) and I got used to seeing the attachments in the preview pane.
In Windows Mail no attachments visible there but, just for kicks, I opened the e-mail and the attachment was there.
This was after moving the e-mails from OL 2002 into Windows Mail though. May not be the case for new mail. Don't know yet...just finished (almost I hope) the migration.
