What would cause a Dell laptop to create a message in the middle of working on something that states "save changes to BIOS". Also when woken from sleep/hibernation mode it asks to save changes to bios. A docking station is used throughout the day.

A BIOS battery fail will give you the error you mention.
It will/would have caused the laptop to have reset the time & date. It should, however, also tell you to save changes to the BIOS a cold boot up.
Change the BIOS battery.
