Hi all,

can you help I am using a comp at the moment that was
operated by someone else and now when you power it up you
get the message 167problem bios is missing does anyone
know the best location or method of fixing this much
appreciated if you can help out.

Thanks all

That is a hardware/motherboard problem. You should probably take it to a
repair shop.

I am surprised you get anything on the screen if the "BIOS is missing" from the
motherboard. Perhaps the BIOS is missing from some other hardware device.

Quite often the BIOS is required to be functioning before it can be replaced.
If it ever is lost the hardware is toast... unless you are good with a soldering iron.

They are usually socketed on the Motherboard.

Perhaps this is another one of those oh so excellently localized messages?

Usually a "sick" BIOS will try to communicate a problem if it can at least
get the video adapter up and running. If it can't manage that it may just
issue a beep...and beyond that nothing at all.

True. I am very surprised that no motherboard manufacturer supplies a hard
coded ROM chip in addition to the flash ROM that would allow system recovery
in the worst possible cases of BIOS corruption or destruction. I have seen
some so-called "goof proof" BIOSes, but every one so far resides in flash
ROM.
