Change the little coin battery located on the motherboard.

Replace the CMOS battery which can be found on the motherboard. Check the
documentation supplied with your PC for instructions on the location of the
battery and how to replace it. If your documentation does not include any
information for replacing the CMOS battery, go to the PC manufacturers
support site for the documentation and/or instructions to replace the CMOS
battery in your exact/specific make/model PC.

Almost all modern desktop PC's use a lithium battery approximately the
size of a nickle and are easy to replace. If you need further assistance in
replacing the CMOS battery please provide us with the PCs
Manufacturer/Make/Model.

Manufacturer - Dell, Emachine, HP, Gateway, etc.
Make - Dimension, Pavilion, etc.
Model/Series - 9200C, 7125, etc.

Example: Dell Dimension 9100C, HP Pavilion 7125

When all power is removed from the computer, the time is
kept running by one of these. This is an example of
a coin cell battery, so named, because it has similar
dimensions to a coin.

The voltage of that battery, is 3.0 volts or so when it is
new. When it is worn out, it will drop to 2.4V or lower.
And at that point, the time won't work right. Changing
the battery will fix it.

The battery is not charged by the computer. Neither
should you try to charge the coin cell battery, because
it would burst.

At least that particular battery type, is widely available.
There are some older computers, where the batteries
may be of a more obscure type, and be harder to fix.

In addition to other's advice on replacing the battery, a circumvention is
to not remove power to the computer. You can turn it off, but leave it
connected to the live power outlet.

On many modern computers, a trickle of power continues to keep the clock
running.
