Bios Sees Memory, XP does not

M

Moe

I just built a new system.

The system runs very fast and nice but,
XP Pro only sees 2GB of memory.
The Bios sees all 3GB and checks OK.
I have tried switching slots around,
adding and removing sticks, but cannot
get XP to see more than 2GB.
Any ideas or help appreciated.

What SP?
Not 100% sure, but I think you may need the /3GB entry in your boot.ini
file -

Thanks Lanwrench,

SP2. I would like to try the 3GB switch, although it looks like it
can be problematic.
I am a complete novice with these issues. So far I understand I would
need to modify the boot.ini file
as per MS ( I have found the URL).
I wish there was a way I could test the switch without possibly
destroying my OS.

Beware of problems when using the /3GB switch, like
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=319043.

Sometimes too much of a good thing isn't a good thing.

I notice you have an identical post in another group, with many replies. Try
those suggestions.
In the future, please don't multipost - if you need to post to multiple
groups, it's best to crosspost instead, by posting a single message to a
handful of relevant groups (separate the NG names with commas) so that
everyone can follow the thread. This makes it easier for everyone, including
you.

Thanks Pavel,

No MAXMEM in boot.ini. And your right, I tried the 3GB switch and it did
not help.
any other ideas?

Thanks Vanguard, I backed up my system and tried the 3GB switch,. I
thought I would surely
be on of those with problems becuase my VC had 256mb of onboard ram.
Turns out that the system ran fine, but did not fix the original problem of
XP seeing only 2GB.

Thanks Lanwrench,

Your comments are noted and appreciated.
Seems some folks get bent for crossposting, others for not.
Damned if you do damned if you don't.
I was just trying to fix a problem.
What criteria did you use for your assumption that I have not
tried the suggestions used in the other posts?
Fact is, I have done nothing all day but follow and apply the suggestions.
I appreciated them, responded and thanked all who contributed.

Moving on....there have basically been two suggestions:
1-Test the memory. I did and it passed with no errors.
2- Try the 3GB switch. I did, and I still have the problem.

Yes, that's true. However, it takes a pretty hardcore crank to get pissed
off about crossposting, while even mild cranks are annoyed about
multiposting, as it really wastes everyone's time, including the
OP's....most people sub to multiple groups, and it's irritating to find one
has spent a lot of time crafting a reply to a post only to discover that it
was resolved in another group. Tell the hardcore cranks to go fly a kite and
do your best to appease the mild variety. :)

Why do you assume I assume you didn't try the suggestions? I'm not watching
that thread.

OK - let's "close" this & I'll try to find your other message, so this
doesn't end up getting even more messy than it is now. Pax.

What application are you using to check the Windows reported number? There
is a slight possibility that all the space is actually identified, but that
some applications would determine the total amount in bytes in a 32-bit
signed integer and that Windows would automatically clip that value to 2 GB
to avoid confusing the application. Also, a single application will never be
able to map more than 2 GB at a single time, but that's another issue
(that's what the /3GB switch is fixing to some degree).

What program/applet are you running that shows you the 2 GB? XP has a
lot of aspects to it.

Have a nice one...
