BIOS password protected

so i am trying to do a clean install of window xp pro on
my buddy's comp by changing the boot order to the CD-ROM
first but i cant get into his bios because it has been
password protected. ive tried some common backdoor
passwords and even some bios cracker but nothing seems to
work. his comp uses AMI BIOS. Besides removing the CMOS
Battery, does anybody have any suggestions?

this question should be posted in the hardware forum.

anyway, yo can search for the jumper on the mainboard
that when closed, will reset the CMOS setting to factory
default and thus solve our problem.

any particular reason why you do not want to remove the
battery? has worked wonderfully for me. every time.

check the motherboard, it might have a 'password' jumper
which you can use to flush the bios password.

I'm wondering though, why you dont just phone up the
buddy to ask what the password is.

If its just a bios password and not a system password there are several
bios password cleaners out there written just for what you need.
Generally, there is no need to take the PC apart for a bios password.

Greetings --

Ask your Buddy what he set it to? Other than that, simply refer
to the PC's documentation to see how to reset the BIOS without pulling
the battery.

there should be a reflasher on your board. Move the jumper reboot and let run for about 3 seconds. Then switch back and everything will be reset to the original config.

Kelly, every since about Mardi Gras, your responses have
become more and more cryptic. Have you given up clarity
for Lent?

That would need you to clear the CMOS - most motherboards have a jumper
which you can bridge so as to clear it on power up - then power off,
remove the jumper - power up and reset things. You need to check the
motherboard manual - if he does not have one, many makers have
downloadable ones on their websites these days
