bios flash help

Hi: I have a question about updating the BIOS on two older Asus P3b-f
motherboards. They currently have bios version 1004 and I need to update
them to 1008 to recognize 1 gig processors. I downloaded the current
aflash and bios 1008f from Asus. I have created a bios flash disk. So
far so good. According to the instructions that came with the
motherboard, I should see two options when I boot to the flash program:

1. Save current BIOS. I have done that.

2. Update BIOS including boot block and ESCD is what I am supposed to
see according to the instructions that came with the motherboard, but
instead I see "Update BIOS without boot block and ESCD"? My question is,
is there a jumper on the motherboard or a setting in the BIOS setup that
I should change so I
can update the boot block and ESCD? Or do I even need to update the boot
block and the ESCD? I have two boards and they tell me the same thing.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated. This is the first time I
have updated a BIOS on these boards and don't want to screw them up. I
purchased two new Asus boards for myself and I am donating these to the
church. Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi,

If there is a jumper that you should change before updating the bios it
would be the first time I've heard of such a precedure. I would suggest
simply following the instructions that ASUS asks you to follow to update the
bios. Use the manual and their website and any instructions that came with
AWARDFLASH. My consideration is that someone miswrote the instruction for
updating the ESCD and the boot block on the Aflash program.
Lastly, is it really necessary to update the bios on these boards before
donating them to the church or would the current bios achieve the same goal?

Just do the update without modifying the boot block. If it fails, you
stand a chance of recovering as it can still boot from a floppy which
it can't do if you do the boot block update as well.

aflash /? will show a list of arguments.

Use the following, if supported:

aflash 1008f.004 /sn/py/cc/cd/cp/LD/E

I just updated my P4c800e-Deluxe using the online auto update
available on ASUS website. Worked fine, one click, no disks, no probs
and took about 3 minutes.

oh, sorry...the name of the update file is asusupdt60601.zip. Download
the appropriate *.rom file first and let the update program install it
from your desktop.
