hello,
i started with a norton ghost operation to clone two disks. the
operation failed and wouldn't load windows again.

i tried fixboot in the recovery console. then i got the error message
"NTLDR is missing"

i found out how to copy ntldr and ntdetect.com back onto the system
drive from the xp disk. I also checked to see if my boot.ini was cool

but, upon restarting xp still will not load. after the bios finishes
its rounds the screen goes black and then the bios starts up again as
if it restarts.

now i'm at a loss. can you help me?

OK not that you have provided a complete description of your problem, however
you should bve able to resolve this by performaing a repair installation.

Set your PC to boot from CD and insert the original XP installation disc.

When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below:

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows
installations.

Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to
start the repair.

Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not
press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue
as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will
remain intact.

Do not immediately activate over the internet when asked, enable the XP
firewall before connecting to the internet. You can activate after the
firewall is enabled.

Control Panel - Network Connections. Right click the connection you use,
Properties, and there is a check box on the advanced page.

Once installation is completed [including Activation] reapply updates or
service packs applied since initial Windows XP installation.

hello bar,
thanks for the tip.
i went ahead and tried it, but the computer still wont get out of the
bios.

windows cd copied neccesary files to the hard drive in order to remair
the os, but the instalation never happened because when the computer
restarted a boot failed message came on and the computer booted from
the cd again.

i tried it again and took the cd out this time, but the system just
hangs with this boot fail message, telling me to install a bootable
disk.

any ideas? questions?
