Big problem

G

guy

Hello, I had noticed that my computer had slowed down. I
own a pentium 4 1.7 gig with 768 megs of ram. I use Norton
System Works for protection and update dayly morning and
night.

Everything seemed to have frozen so I rebooted my computer
and got the following message: <windows root>\system32
\hal.dll missing, please re-install. I rebooted and tried
going into safe mode and got the following message:
<windows root>system32\ntoskrn1.exe missing please re-
install.

I tried finding from the microsost data base something
simular I had found for Win 98. I had lost a command line
and found an article giving me all the locations of each
file found on the cd rom. Does anyone know of such an
article for XP? Or, can someone email me the two files?

Thank you

Guy

What system error reports are you getting in Event Viewer?

1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).

2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article containing a suggested solution.

There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.

Actually it does not, I've written so many times on both
the english and french newsgroup that I have lost track of
what I said and where. My computer does not get past the
initial detection of what drives I have and how much
memory. Window does not open at all, the red light stays
on all the time as if it is constantly searching. I've
tried sfc \scannow and sfc \scanonce commands but they are
not recognized as if DOS is dead.

I tried doing a "R" with the XP disk with no success.
Someone mentionned it could be my RAM but I checked and
they are ok. My burner, cd rom and "A" drive's are
detected.

Have you your run a virus checker and if so has it deleted any infected
files?
