BIG BIG Mistake

Thought before I put my AV on I'd give System Restore another go at a much
earlier date and see if it performed as it did the first time I tried it
when it took about 20-30 minutes. Big mistake it is doing it now and looks
like I'm going to be on 2 hours again. If I knew how to stop it without
damaging the setup I would!!
I am wondering whether by its very nature it scours all the System Restores
I've already done as I had to do a lot to find out what my problem was but
the date I've picked for this Restore was before then. Perhaps I should have
performed Undo Restore at some point (which I never did). Perhaps I should
clear the Restore Points and start again!! Any input would be welcome.

How long it takes depends upon how much information System Restore had to
accumulate when it created the specific restore point as well as how much
needs to be undone bases on changes to the system since that time. No, it
doesn't souring all the restores it does check where your system was at the
time of the specific restore you have chosen versus the system's current
setup.

It's best to let it continue to run.

It is now on 3hours and still not finished. I have only had the laptop
since 9th January and only installed about 4 progs since then. Can't be
much information on it. Was wondering if clearing all Restore points would
help for in the future?

All that will do is wipe out all current restore points. I don't know why
it is taking so long, I assume the laptop is running off of AC instead of
the battery? If not, that might be the issue as most laptops today will go
into a power conservation mode when working off the battery.

I had this come up once on a desktop system I had. I have no idea why it
took so long but for some reason it took a several hours. That is not
always the case, it is not the norm but I have had it happen. I had it
happen previously and I stopped the System Restore only to have to start
over as the system was that action really messed things up. Hence, when it
repeated, I decided to simply let it run and see what would happen, 3 or 4
hours later it finally finished and everything was fine. NOTE: in the
scenario where I simply stopped it, I had recent full backups and a recent
image of my system so I was able to quickly get myself up and running again.
Still, having System Restore do it's thing to completion was much
preferable.

If you've had the computer less than a month and only have 4 programs
installed, why are you bothering with trying all these system restores? Is
this just some sort of experiment to see what happens, or are you having
specific problems or what?
