No, the person in question has not ever tried WLM, and won't on
principle, due to his stated beliefs. Thanks for your input on the issue.

Hi, Daze.

Yes. It does make itself the default - without asking. But it doesn't
delete Windows Mail. It just deletes the WM icon and shortcut. You can
still run WM just by starting it from Windows Explorer or All Programs or a
Command Prompt window - and maybe other ways I haven't found.

You can even run both WM and WLM side by side. That's what I've been doing
during the WLM beta. I set both programs to Leave messages on the Server
for 14 days. I run WLM mostly, but make sure to run WM at least every week
or so and collect all my mail there, in addition to having it in WLM's
message store. That way, now that WLM is finally released, my WM email
database is fully up-to-date and I can Import it into WLM and then say
goodbye for good to WM. (I'll have to remember to preserve WLM's Sent
Items, too, since those are not in WM.)

At any time, I could have reverted completely to WM - but I never was
tempted to do that. ;<)

| Thanks for answering that question for me. So, it does automatically
| take over as default without asking you if that's what you want?

On my non WLM beta XP system, WLM 1606 asked if I wanted it to be my
default email/newsgroup.

Unfortunately that is not an option.

yes, you should use XP and OE6

Vista is bad for other far more serious reasons that make windows mail
crappyness a joke...

You know, I was at that site but I wondered if Live Mail had changed because
unless I missed it (entirely possible) among all the great features it lists
I couldn't find anything about newsgroups.

In going to that link and clicking Get Windows Live it takes me to a page
that asks what features to install and says nothing about newsgroups. At
first I thought that maybe that was just part of the basic package but mail
is something you are asked to check if you want it. Does Live Mail still do
newsgroups?

Thanks for that information. In my case, however, I use Thunderbird and
that's what I would be concerned about getting screwed up. I've tried
Windows Mail a couple of times and found it to be ridiculously inferior
to the old Outlook Express.

Bob,

Overall responsiveness is much better. Loading the newsgroup,
downloading headers, catch up, and mark all read are a lot
quicker now. And if you aren't using WLM to check your Hotmail,
disabling the automatic sign-in greatly speeds up opening WLM.

Hey, David.

I didn't have any trouble installing it, and this time even left
the previous version in place.... all went perfect.

It did make itself the default email client, but when I started
Outlook, Outlook took it right back.
It did not take over as the default newsreader, however.

I like it. I've actually been gone most of the day, so I haven't
used it except for a couple of hours this morning.

Let me know what you think.

-Michael

That user might be confused with Windows Live Hotmail.
Otherwise, I think that person is misinformed.

-Michael

As best as I can remember, it did so without asking.
I use WLM for email, and Windows Mail for newsgroups, so a
quick visit to Default Programs was necessary to straighten that out.

Careful with that "Windows Live" terminology because it includes a
whole suite of programs. Yes, Windows Live Mail includes the news reader.

Hi, Michael:

Thanks for your latest impressions regarding WLM. Although I use
Thunderbird for both e-mail and newsgroups, and expect to continue doing
so since I'm perfectly happy with my own current setup, I would
nevertheless be interested in trying out WLM to see what I think of it.
Are there any complications involved in downloading and installing WLM
that I should be aware of? It doesn't, for instance, automatically take
over as the default e-mail client or newsreader, does it?

Since I typically use Outlook for email, my biggest use
for WLM is newsgroups. The overall performance has
improved dramatically. Thank you. I've been using
Thunderbird, but I may switch back to WLM.

Just one thing, for now, I sure do wish there was an easy
way to collapse the header bar like in Thunderbird... that's
a big chunk of screen space taken up that could be devoted
to the message I'm reading. Is there a way to get rid of it or
make it smaller?

-Michael

I agree with "Show All Messages"/"Hide Read Messages."
Maybe, the development team will come around to add
this. I can't believe there's not some heavy newsgroup readers
on the development team that agree with us.

I do like like the "Quick Views". I have "Unread watched news"
there and find that feature to be useful.

I just couldn't stand the horribly slow performance
of Windows Mail, and it wasn't just on one machine.

Hopefully, WLM will continue to improve even more.

WM's feature that enables rapid switching between "Show All Messages"

handy feature.

IMO, compared to what it was and most definitely
when compared to WM, WLM has improved greatly.

Since I only use WLM for newsgroups, I may not be seeing
the same bugs you are experiencing. -Michael

Now I'm really lost. I downloaded it (I thought it was email & newsreader)
turns out to be a browser + but where are my newsgroups? I told it not to
install email, was that a mistake? Are there instructions anyplace?

I'm going to post the direct links for each Windows Live program.
Each link downloads the WLinstaller.exe but set specifically for
that particular program. When you run the installer, you will also
have the opportunity to select any of the other programs. The first
link is just the general installer with no choice set.
Surprisingly, none of the downloads require "validation".

Without sounding too rude- no sh!t.

But I do have Thunderbird installed and set as my
default newsreader.... it didn't mess with that.
