problems sending large attachments

I am helping a neighbor with his 4 month old HP A6120N (Core 2 Duo with 2 gb
of ram) computer with Vista Premium. I've tried Windows Mail, Windows Live
Mail and Thunderbird and all 3 have a problem sending emails with
attachments around 1.5 mb and higher. WM and WLM will timeout with a wait
or cancel msg, if you click wait then the mail will finally go through.
With Thunderbird you just get the timeout msg with no provisions to wait.
Another strange thing is that with WM or WLM, when you click on a msg in the
inbox with a large attachment, it takes approximately 4 to 5 seconds for the
msg to show up in the preview pane, not so with Thunderbird. Smaller
attachments or emails with no attachments work just fine, both sending and
previewing.
It's connected to broadband cable through a wireless router with a wireless
card but I've ran an ethernet cable and direct connected it to the router
and it made no difference. His wife's much less powerful HP running XP Pro
and using OE has no problems and runs circles around the Vista mail
programs. His machine takes longer for a preview display to show up of an
email with a large attachment than his wife's machine does to forward that
same email and attachment.

Make sure you are not using incompatible third party security
software. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

It's working. Went over this morning and disabled the Trend Micro antivirus
software that was running. All the emails, regardless of attachment size
now can be forwarded without any problems. I uninstalled the Trend
antivirus and a 3rd party spysweep program, both of which he got talked into
buying by the salesman, and installed Grisoft AVG free. I've used AVG free
for years and have never encountered a virus problem.
Anyway, all is well and I thank you Gary for the suggestion.

Thank you for confirming once again that many of the third
party security products are not compatible with Windows Mail.
