This is not what i would call a fix but if you can get to the screen were
your desktop is ment to be press ctrl+alt+delete and it will display a screen
were you can do a few things. click on the little round icon in the bottom
left corner and turn on high contrast mode. This allowed me to load my
desktop and disable areo which seems to be the cause of this issue imo.

my stats are
ASUS A8R-MVP
MSI RADON X1300
1.5GB Ram
CREATIVE Audigy 2 ZS

Are any of you using Diskkeeper 10 Beta? My installation was running great,
stress tested it with every program I could think of, no issues. After
running Diskkeeper instead of Windows installed defrag program, system would
not get past black screen with build info, same as you. Suggest this issue is
a bug which allows defrag to move files that Vista dosen't want moved, and
then it balks at starting up after that. May not be the issue, but it seems
damn funny that everything was going great until then.....

This version of Diskeeper is not compatible yet with the current build.

Maybe Igot the build number of the program wrong, but they offer a beat that
works with Vista, and that's the one I used.Maybe it messed with the video
drivers or something.

Yes, you are right but that build they made was for as previous version of
Vista we all are waiting for a new build from diskeeper that will work with
the current build.

There are actually only 10 kinds of people in this world; those who can read
binary and those who can't.

LOL Colin,

Can I use that?

I also get a black screen with mouse cursor and Vista Build #5472 on lower
right. At first, I thought that my computer was locked up, but if I wait,
and I mean wait over 5-7 minutes, I eventually get the login screen with no
further problems. This began to happen to me after I installed Office 2007
beta and AVG. I uninstalled AVG, but problem did not go away. I actually
re-booted two or three times initially before this problem appeared.

First occurance was an upgrade from an earlier Vista build, then I completed
a clean install, same problem after the initial two or three re-boots.

I am considering removing Office 2007 beta next to see if it goes away, but
from reading about other people with this issue, I do not believe that is
what is causing this issue???

If you unplug the network cable from the back of your computer, does it
still lock up?

Yes sir, it still hung up on the black screen with build # in lower right for
exactly 5 1/2 minutes till the login screen appeared. Let me also clarify,
the mouse cursor is present and moves properly, the computer is not
completely locked up during this time period. Almost as if Vista is waiting
or looking for something???

Whatever it was doing may have timed out and left a clue in the Event
Viewer.

Rebooted and checked the event log viewer for the past 24 hours. A "Boot
Performance Monitoring" critical event keeps showing up when I reboot, but it
just confirms what I am experiencing, a long boot time. Couldn't see a
source of the problem in the event log. I saved the log info to a file, but
I do not see a way to attach to this forum, I am using the web interface to
this forum, I do not have a news reader set up for here.

I have the same problem with an ATI x1300 512mb, using the ATI beta drivers,
I just see black screen after logging in. BUT I tried pressing the start
button and up a few times like 30-45 sec after login and hitting enter and
waiting and the desktop CAME UP! turned out to be the welcome screen and I
have done it every time and it has worked 80% of the time, sometimes coming
up instanlly, sometimes taking 2 min. also I hit up the same number of times,
so you could probably figure out the number in safe mode.

Hope it helps!

I'm having the same problem.... It was working correctly about one week...
and now, stuck in this black screen with mouse pointer...

If I go in Safe mode, the same occurs...
How should I solve this??
