I get it to the point where isstarts to load vista but then I see the Build
in the bottom right and the screen is black. Do I have to install the ATI
drivers for Vista before I install vista? And has anyone had this issueand
over come it?

Thanks

I have the issue too and don't know the solution to it. But, my video
card (a Radeon X300 Series) is made by ATI (If that helps any).

You need to contact ATI about this issue and also file a report using the
following links:

Feedback reporting tool:

Extracting the ATI driver file for your card and try updating it through
Device Manager using the .inf file?

FWIW I have the same problem but I'm using an Nvidia GeForce 6600GT. Were
you able to boot into safe mode? I tried that and still got stuck at the
same spot.

I'm having a similar problem using a Radeon X1300. I can boot fine in safe
mode, but if I try to boot normally it goes to the login screen, I enter my
password, and then the screen goes black, and all I can see is the mouse and
dark shapes rendering where the desktop should be. I've downloaded the
drivers and tried to install them, but get an error since windows installer
is not accessable in safe mode.

Also, what exactly do oyu mean by :

This is obviously a common 'feature' now. As I am also having the same
issue. My card is the ATI X800 XT Platinum Edition.

At the final stage of the upgrade all I get is black screen and the build
number in the bottom right.

It would be nice if there was a fix around this. After all the trouble
getting the download and then waiting for the long upgrade... its a dam
shame that it does not work.

Any help from Microsoft would be appreciated.

Gazza.

Dont think its just an ATI thing cause I have it with an NVidia 6600, and
even if I try safe mode. I've sent in a report and msinfo dump with it..
Might try again with an older video card I have.... Another thought I
had -- I was installing on a drive with 20GB free before installation, it
may not have had enough free space after the upgrade (though I would have
expected to see a warning or error about that)

install the > ATI >>> drivers for Vista before I install vista? And

Well, I just learned that Vista doesn't like drivers that were loaded
from Windows XP. Install it on a second hard drive and it'll work.

Has anyone found a solution? I can't bbot either into mode, just the black
screen with the bottom right info. Did the install not complete? There is
no way to install the new drivers if you can't get past this screen.

Have you tried it with a more generic driver? That's what I'm
using and I didn't eally have that much trouble.

I also have an ATI graphics driver and when Vista installed it took out the
driver now it shows as an unknown device before i could get any furher the
computer locked up i shut down started up in safe mode (took 25 mins to load)
i went into hardware device manager found my "unknown device" figured out it
was my ATI tried to update and roll back the driver since none were found
couldnt do that went to www.ati.com downloaded the catalyst beta driver
installe computer had to restart at that point... took 35 mins to load seems
to hang on the black screen forever after 35 mins it did load normally (not
in the safe mode) my desktop was back to normal size icons looked like that
worked then all of a sudden i get the "unkown hardware issue again" VISTA is
still not recogognizing the ATI not sure what to do at this point ??? too
many things trying to load and install so havent gotten past this driver
issue... computer is hanging WHERE IS MICROSOFT ?? seems to me ATI is trying
but no words from microsoft regarding this in any posts at all ???

FWIW - I have an Nvidia 4600 video card and get the Black Screen in both
normal and safe mode. I am upgrading Windows XP Pro. I installed the latest
XP Nvidia GeForce beta driver before my fourth try upgrading and still nada.
Has anyone tried installing the Windows Vista beta driver in XP before
upgrading? I may try that next. This is off the subject slightly but if I
run Nero Drive Speed after inserting the installation DVD just before the
upgrade and select 16x for the DVD read speed, it takes 4 minutes to "copy
windows files." If I don't it takes 64 minutes at 1x.

I have an ATI beta driver and i decided after days of fighting in safe mode
