My Computer Info: Toshiba laptop, satellite 1905-277, Pentium 4 CPU 1.60 GHz
256 MB of RAM
OS: Windows XP Home Edition with SP1

I have some data in the above laptop which belongs to my office and I have
to transfer them to another computer (a desktop) and free the laptop for
other usage. What is the best and fastest way to transfer data from a laptop
to a desktop. Both of them have USB port and I am thinking to connect them
with a USB-USB cable. unfortunately my desktop doesn't have a lan card so I
cant use this method.
Is there any other way?

Size of files: 6.27 GB, Number of Files: 26,211 and number of folders: 2882
Most of them are data stored from websites and photos taken by a digital
camera. For photos I will write them to a CD but I dont know the best
treatment for web pages.

I would vote for CD's. That will also give you a back up.

A NIC card in the desktop and a crossover cable is going to be cheaper than
the USB crossover cable that you'd need.

I use a portable harddrive, it's not the cheapest way but if you do get
one and use it, you'll find many other uses for it!

Use a cross over cable. This is different than a patch cable. A cross over
cable can be purchased in a wide variety of lengths. In your case a 3-6
footer would be fine. This type of cable allows for one way data transfer
between computers. Another way is to burn it then copy it. You could even
get a jumpdrive to copy data to for transfer

This won't work. Not because it's a bad idea - it's probably the best
given the need. It won't work because the OP's desktop doesn't have
an ethernet card for the crossover to plug into.

Best solution is to buy/install an ethernet card - less than $20 -
then get the crossover (I found one for $6 at an Office Depot).
