Best way to setup after Format

D

Deon H

Hi there,

WIN XP Prof

I am planning to re-format my HDD to get rid of a lot of junk and to try
to do a better installation than the previous time.

Background
I have my own Laptop which is part of a small Network of 3 computers at
work in our family business; so it's not important to have my own
username & password as Administrator.
The computers are connected to each other by means of a cable network
connected to a 8-port hub. Ons of the other 2 computers shares resources
such as the internet & printer.
I want the other computers to have access to my shared document folder
without being prompted for a username & password.

Question:
What is the best way to configure my Laptop with installation, meaning,
must I fill in a username & password for Administrator? Previously I
have just left it opened and entered through that.

Your advice will be much appreciated.

Regards,

Deon H

If you have no security concerns on that network, and you want to share the
documents on your laptop with the other computers, you need to have admin
rights on the laptop then right click the laptop folder you want to share
with the others and on the 'sharing' tab tick the 'share this folder on the
network' box and type in a share name, leave the password blank. Choose
whether to let others save files. No passwords will be asked for.

Paul,

thanx for your prompt advice.
I get to where I right click the folder I want to share. This works
good. When I click on the "sharing"-tab, there is no option that says:
"share this folder on the network" and I also don't have a screen that
even asks for a password.

I have SP2 with latest updates and not Simple File sharing.

Am I doing anything wrong?

Deon, Do you have networking installed on your computer at the moment? If
not you may have to install it to see the "share this folder on the network"
option.

'control panel' 'network and internet connections' 'setup or change you
home or office network'. If the computer has the hardware connected with the
other computers and they are turned on then xp network setup is usually
straight forward.

Deon, I just had another thought, if you are logged on as a user without
admin rights I don't think you would see the option to share folders either.

Paul,
thanx again for your replies.

I do have Admin rights, I think. How can I make sure? I just had a look and
changed to Simple File sharing. Then I see the "share on network", but
still no password field.

I am currently connected with 100% function to the network.

Paul,
I have just checked. I am the Administrator, username DeonH without a
password.

Sorry Deon, XP doesn't come up with a password field when enabling sharing
on a folder. It was W98 that did that. But you said you don't want passwords
so no problem.

The links in the following post explain configuring user accounts and folder
permissions -
