Best way to deploy Service Pack 4 on windows 2000

Have you any idea of which is the best way to deploy the
SP4? As far as I know the SMS tool is the adequate. But,
is there a restriction regarding which tool to use when
deploying this type of updates?

Can i use Tivoli to distribute the SP4? Altiris?, i need
to know if there's a document that states that to deploy
Services Pack you need to use the SMS tool, in order to
get those updates.

If you have any info regarding this i'd really appreciate
if you can share it with me...

sincerely

I've successfully used a GPO to install it. That would be the cheapest
route if you don't currently own Tivoli or Altiris software. You just put
all your PCs in an OU in Active Directory, and a GPO with SP4 attached to
the computer part of the GPO (update.msi) and you're off. Oh, you have to
expand the service pack first. Run the executable with a /x switch and
expand it to a share on your server. Then point your GPO to the update.msi
file in the update folder within the i386 folder created after expanding
SP4. It's pretty simple and works. Let your users know before hand though
because it adds between 5 and 10 minutes on their next boot and they are not
always happy to see that.

I have ran into an issue with one client. I was not able to deploy it from
one server and I'm not sure why. It says it can't find the update.exe file,
but it was there. My only guess is that the server name had a "-" in the
name. I put it on a server without a dash in the name and it ran fine. I
had this issue with both SP1 for XP and SP4 for Win2k. If anyone is out
there who knows why this is, let me know please.

Hi,

I use PsExec from SysInternals and two tiny *.BAT files. Takes about 15
minutes to set up instead of 15 hours.

I will probably try GPO in the future, but I've read up, and it's not
the panacea I'd hoped for.

Howdy! Howdy!

I have used GPO to deploy WIN2000 SP2 and SP3 for awhile
now and it works very well. I am now working mostly with
the so-called "slipstreaming" method with RIS but if RIS
is not a possiblility then I would go with GPO.

HTH,

Cary
