Can the "SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack" be used to deploy
Windows XP Professinal on workstation with NO Operating Systems. Can the
"SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack" do this by itself of is
"RIS" needed. I have red some articles which was not too clear. Also, what
licensing are involved with SMS deployment. Thanks.

Deploying to a "Bare Metal" machine is one of the supported scenarios for
SMS OSD deployments. This does require either booting from an SMS OSD Image
Installation CD (which is actually Windows PE on steroids) or delivering
same with RIS. Details are contained in the "SMS OS Deployment Feature Pack
Users Guide" that installs along with the feature pack and also in the "Zero
Touch Installation Feature Team Guide" which is part of the BDD Solution
Accelerator available online from:

http://www.microsoft.com/desktopdeployment

BDD adds significant additional functionality to OSD, and should be your
basis for a Bare Metal install.

As to licensing... you of course need client OS licenses for any OS you
deploy; SMS OSDFP also includes a license to use Windows PE for your
deployments projects.

I've cross-posted your question & my answer to two other groups that are
likely the best choice for similar questions in the future:

microsoft.public.sms.tools - primary group for SMS OSD & other SMS related
tools questions
microsoft.public.deployment.desktop - new group on all things related to
Business Desktop Deployment

Hope this helps!
