best solution to combine/decode yEnc-encoded binaries?

Getting programs from ABF is a bit new to me. Neither OE or TBird seem to
support yEnc encoding. Ultimately I combined using OE, saved to text file,
decoded using UUDeview. A bit tedious to have to go through all these
steps.

What's the simplest (freeware) way to combine and decode these messages and
produce the binary on my hard drive?

As a OE6 user, FidolookSL plug-in to OE, be sure to activate the yEnc option
after install.

I use it and like it.

IMO beyond the shadow of any doubt, that would be Grabit:

http://www.shemes.com/

which is Pricelessware I believe. I use it and love it.

I've used GrabIt also. A really nice program. It also supports NZB file
format [newzbin.com] which is really nice.

The only problem I had with it was that at the time I tried it, afew
months ago, it appeared that downloading and decoding were two separate
steps, that it wouldn't automatically decode? As I recall, I had to
use a shell extension to then select the files to process for decoding.
Is this still true?

Thanks!

Not as far as I can tell. Granted, the resulting download *may* be an
archived (.zip, .rar, etc.) file that you have to expand, but using
Iceows or some other such program on the file isn't a big deal. In fact,
I just used Grabit to download a file that's a yEnc encoded .pdf file
and the result was that I got a .pdf file on my hard drive. At least in
this case it was automatic.

I used to use BNR2, which was a buggy, poorly written program which kept
getting worse and worse. Eventually, after reinstalling BNR2 for the
umpteenth time, I tried Grabit and it was like a bright, new day!

I use PowerGrab. I prefer it to BNR2 or Grab-it.

I use PowerGrab. I prefer it to BNR2 or Grab-it.
Power-Grab is a 32-bit windows application that allows you to download
files from a Usenet News server.

- Download with up to 8 server connections at once.
- Decodes UU-Encoded and yEnc encoded files.
- Auto-Resume on disconnects and server down-time.
- Modifiable Download Queue window.
- Downloads can be stopped and restarted from where it left off.
- Download speed limit can be set and changed while downloading.
- Header data files are much smaller than those found in other news
grabbers.
- Find window lets you search across ALL groups for keywords
- History window shows what you've done, when you did it, and how long
it took.
- Newsgroup list shows how many files and their total size in K, MB or
GB.
- Lots of testing has made Power-Grab stable and Resource-Friendly!
- Freeware

I prefer PowerGrab me too. I dumped Grab-it after finding that it doesn't
autoresume a download after a disconnection, I have to manually hit the
"retry" button. Therefore I can't leave a download unattended.

Looks like a good one all right, but unfortunately, the home page:

http://www.cosmicwolf.com/cosmicwolf/default.asp

for that program seems to be "under construction" and last was updated
on July 1, 2005, whatever that means. I also can't find the program
listed at any reputable freeware webwsites. Some of them may have
carried it in the past but they may have removed it because the home
page no longer provides any information about the program.

Hard to say if the program is still being developed.

or you may try ydecode at - www.ydecode.com

that one will decode yenc in both programs outlook express and thunderbird - if you wish to continue using them. free version has some limitations though.

sorry, but that yproxy version isn't freeware.

I use an OE attachment called OeYenc. It automatically decodes Yenc
messages that have the phrase "Yenc" in the title. You don't need to do
anything else.

a link would be nice next time ( it's http://www.mutexed.com/code/OeyEnc/ )
I read that there are not that much users, so you are the author?

OeYenc is beta freeware software ( oh oh, may we discuss experimental
software? ;-)) ). OK, I will be more serious.

1) System Requirements: Windows 2000 or Windows XP

2) Does OeyEnc work with other news/mail applications?
No. OeyEnc is for OE only.

To be more precise : OE6+

Yproxy is for all the windows versions and all the programs/newsreaders who
can work with localhost.

If you are talking about decoding and combining yEnc files from Usenet
newsgroups you could try Gravity or the free version of Agent.
