Im in the market for a professional photo printer.
Ideal for studio and portrait quality prints. Does
anyone have any suggestions? About a $400 - $ 800 Can
price range. Economical too.

Thanks

Your price range gets you into wide carriage models like the Epson
2200 or Canon 9100.

Epson is the only one with archival (pigment) ink. Epson also has
more 3rd party stuff available, but that will surely change.

Canon is faster but will not do long panoramas and has no roll feeder.

If you are going to be doing pro work, check out MIS
(www.inksuply.com) and Mediastreet. If nothing else, you will see the
range of issues with ink and paper and lifetime.

"Economical"---you mean the cost of consumables? 3rd party refill
kits or a continuous feed system will save you bunch of money here

Thanks Mark.
I use mainly Epson now (SC 3000)
It doesnt quite cut it though for me although I
believe I can get Pigment inks.
BTW the link you supplied dont work for me.

I appreciate it.

If you only do 4x6 photos, the best deal is the Sony DPP-EX5. But if you do
Legal Paper size photos, then get a hold of a Canon BJC-8200 as ink is cheap
($17 for all six colors on Ebay's Buy It Now) and can be refilled (universal
inkjet as seen on TV) without violating the DMCA.

The only little problem is that the ink fades if you don't store the picture in
a frame or behind something clear. Oh wait, that's probably a BIG problem...

The IBM photo quality Matte Coated Inkjet Paper is really nice.

If you do lot of printing then I think you can save lot of $$$$ by
using CIS (Continuous Ink System) like the link below

http://www.weink.com/ecom/catalog/for_epson_324373_products.htm

There are 3-4 other companies making similar, and the price can be
from $100-300 (the price of the link above go Higher/Lower pretty
often).

I just installed one for my Epson Photo 900 last nite (I paid $64 for
it little over a week ago, and it took them about a week or so to build
the unit for your specific printer). And I am pretty sure you can use
any type of ink you want too, and you can keep on printing for years
without having to replace ink cartridge.

I spent 20 mins sitting in whirl-pool carefully read the instruction,
and it took me about 10 mins to install it and it works right away (it
sure worked yesterday and haven't tried it today yet).
