We are looking to buy a new computer. I use it primarily for internet
applications like e-mail and banking, plus some gaming (Flight Sim). My
wife wants to take up digital photography, with some photo editing and
archiving old photos and documents. I know I could throw money at the
problem, but I don't want to. I want a good system that will do the above
without breaking the bank. What are some suggestions on minimum processors,
hard drive, memory and chip type (AMD or Intel).

Look for AMD; either Athlon64 or Athlon64 X2; get a system with at least
1GB of RAM, and as big a HDD as you can afford.

Intel is way overpriced, runs hot, and still uses older motherboard
technology (no DCA, no on-die memory controller, no Hypertransport bus,
etc).

I really don't think you can do better for the money than buy a PC base unit
from Aldi or Lidls.

I couldn't find any on offer at present but when I wanted one for my son
they told me no problem they could get one from another store if they sold
out.

It has performed well and was far cheaper than anything comparable on the
market.
