I plan to purchase software for imaging and cloning - any experience or
advice to share?

Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image 9.0, others?

You will find proponents of each. Also there is Terabyte Unlimited's
Image for Windows, CasperXP, and PowerQuest's Drive Image 7 which was
bought out by Symantec and it's features merged into Ghost.

For just cloning (not imaging), CasperXP is great.
It costs less than the others ($50) and you can download
a free 30-day trial copy at
www.FSSdev.com/products/casperxp/ .
While Acronis's True Image can clone an entire HD
and make that the entire contents of another HD,
CasperXP can take a single partition and put among
other partitions on the destination drive as well as
clone an entire HD. Ghost can also do that, but Ghost
requires .NET Framework to be installed and it requires
a re-boot once or twice, whereas CasperXP does the
cloning while Windows continues to run.

I've use Ghost (9) and compared it to Acronis True Image (8) and Acronis has
a comparatively easier interface to negotiate and has proven reliable since
I've used it from last July.

I vote for True Image.
