I'm having a job cloning XP. I have 2 SATA drives.
The first has XP on C: and two more partitionsD:, E; The second has three
partitions F: G: H:
Almost every time the cloned drive does not fully boot. It nearly gets
there, but goes to a blue screen with cursor at the end. I've seen this
mentioned so many times but have yet to unearth a solution that works for
me.
So far I've used the following:
Norton Ghost 9.0 direct copying and going via an image.
Acronis Migrate Easy Personal 7.0 which did work first time but it's a pain
because it copies entire disk. I just want C:\
Acronis True Image 8.0 trial which worked once for some reason, but not
since.
Casper XP Clone wouldn't boot at all.
and I've tried:
Not allocating a drive letter or formatting partition in advance of cloning
to F:
Disabling Avast! anti virus software
I always unplug the first drive before testing, as I've heard that some sort
of dependency can exist otherwise with the cloned drive booting but only if
original is present. I've tried the clone on both SATA channels.
Is the fact that the cloned drive is F: a problem?
Next I'm going to boot into the Acronis rescue disk, and try cloning from
there, although it's more fiddly and supposedly not necessary any more.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
