I haven't tried one for a couple of years; I guess I'm looking for one
that's pretty close to Firefox in functionality.

What's the current favourite?

When i don't use Opera8, my prefered IE clone is DeepNet Explorer.

i used to use Crazy Browser -- based on IE core, but tabbed, supports
saving groups of pages, etc. Once nice feature is that in Favorites,
you have the option to open ALL links. Very nice, indeed. Decent popup
blocker, too.

However, my current favorite is Maxthon. Does all the above and more.
It's skinnable, tons of addons available. Much more options that Crazy
Browser, nicer options for saved groups, such as order, adding brief
description, etc. And, take a look at it's cool mouse move options:
such as while on a page, hold right-click and scroll up-down for
refresh. Other mouse movements go to next tab, previous page, etc. One
I really like is highlighting text, then left-right mouse opens new tab
& searches for highlighted text, ie, Google. And the customizable
options are way cool.

Why not Firefox? You can customize it just as you want. For example, i read
my rss feeds in firefox, have a ftp client, can use different skins etc

However, my current favorite is Maxthon. Does all the above and more.

I like very much also the "Super drag & drop" (http://snipurl.com/h3ms):

If you click & drag an hyperlink, Maxthon will open it in a new window
(by the way, you can do the same thing pressing "Shift").

If you select a word and the drag it a little beside, Maxthon open a new
window with your default search engine searching that word (very
useful!); but if you press also "Ctl", Maxthon save the text ondisk in a
default directory with a default name (contaning the page's name and a
progressive number) [without asking anything: only status bar indicate
this]

If you drag an image, Maxthon open it in a new window; if you press
"Ctl", save it.

I don't know the suggested "Deepnet", but it's surely better than
Maxthon in one thing: the home page (no blondes in Maxthon!).

P.S. Rarely, Maxthon has lost my config files (search & alias): better
backup them sometime!!!

Does Firefox save web pages in .mht format yet? When they get around to
adding that feature, let me know and I might try it again. Till then,
Maxthon/IE rules.

Who has ever heard of DeepNet Explorer ?

Well I hadn't - but after trying it, I have found it to be the best of all.

Its so professional, and they don't even want donations !

Just look at their Quick Tour at http://deepnetexplorer.com/
without having to down load it.

Then try it - and get hooked !

Yes it does! ...with the help of the MAF (Mozilla Archive
Format) extension [http://maf.mozdev.org/]

I don't find Tab-locking (to open every link of the page in a new
window) and probably there isn't the search alias (but there are the
alias).

The look is a little poor (no skins), but there is a P2P browser ready
to start!
OK, without setting anything, it finds only few files...but it goes!

I think to when I've tried to teach by telephone how to install and set
up EMule.... :-/
Now I can say: download DeepNet, click on "P2P", make your search like
in Google and double-click on files to download!

I use the Japanese program Sleipnir- there is an English edition v1.66,
although the Japanese version is at v2 beta.

You can download v1.66 here:

Fastbrowser Pro

http://www.fastbrowser.net/

I prefer the older version (5, but it was 'payware'). The program recently
went freeware, and version 8.1 on the website.

Can you maybe answer a question on Avant browser?
For some reason since I installed it on my new-built PC, it refuses
to open files of filetype .mht or .mhtml (these are saved web pages
on my HDD). It just tries to 'download' them for 20-30 secs from my
HDD folder and then stops. It opens ordinary .html files no problem.

I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with that. Actually, I
generally use Firefox.

I've tried pretty much all of them as well as Firefox and settled on Avant.
For ME it's the best becuase of it's features as well as highly configurable
user interface.

To get all the functionality of a shell like Avant Browser I would need to
download and install numerous extensions for Firefox. Extensions are just
another headache and potential attack vector (can you say webmonkey?). Plus
Avant is just over 1MB in size. Also I don't particularlily like the Firefox
user interface.
