best / good drive imager?

best / good drive imager?
I have Acronis 11 TI, but it started hanging on me yesterday under Vista.
it always hangs for 40 secs or so running standalone.

I tried Paragon Drive Backup 8.51, it imaged okay but wanted 2 hrs plus to
restore 5gb *Acribuis tajes 8 min) - I guess It's using PIO1... (did not
send them a note).

I tried rtt r-drive image and it imaged fine but I couldn't boot the damn
Linux CD even with bios sata set to IDE/disa/legacy. (sent them a note)

Tried casper but it images 1:1 and I don't have the HD capacity at the
moment (sata 160 and IDE 80) and prefer the compressed images that I can
put to DVD occasionally if I so choose (and I do)

Latest PQDI on torrent is 7 which is flagged as Vista non-compatable anyway
(I didn't try it).

I used to use ghost but a while back when I upgraded, the boot cd caused a
bluescreen because it wanted to call home on an intel NIC, so I went to
Acronis.

I keep looking around but would appreciate ideas!

tia!!!

I've been using Acronis 10 on my Vista and it seems to work fine. I
had used Norton Ghost before on XP and never had a problem but they
were so slow coming up with a Vista compatible version I switched to
Acronis. You can find good and bad about all of them.

So true - thanks for your thoughts!

I also use TI 11 and it works great on my Vista Ultimate system. There is,
however, a "new kid on the block" which some friends of mine have lauded. It
is called, "ShadowProtect" and can be found here:
http://www.storagecraft.com/products/ShadowProtectDesktop/. There are a
couple of other editions too which may be more applicable to what type of
system you are using.

Your hanging problem is not typical. Have you asked for help on the Acronis
True Image support forum?

I used Acronis 11 just last week on daughter's Vista Home Premium laptop -
worked fine.

Image for Windows (IFW) or BootIT (partition manager containing same
imager) work nicely,
if you're a bit geeky. Excellent newsgroup support as well.

Tested it and it seems very fast. However the trial version does not
include the recovery environment CD, so I can't test that unless I buy it.
I believe in peter pan and tinkerbell, too, but recovery CDs I test, as
lots simply don't boot on my computer.

Backup and restore center, then the back up computer button. Note, only
available in Ultimate edition of Vista.

I can do 3 partitions on my computer. I only have 3 so I can't test if it
can do more. Do you have Service Pack 1 installed? Maybe it doesn't no none
NTFS partitions.

the good: fast, Vista on recovery CD.
the bad: will not allow different target partition size - forces it to same
as upload. Seems to say you can recovery to a larger partition but the
sizing/amount used is all wrong. Considering that, at $80, it's bloody
expensive.

bing - boot it no good - actually I tried this a long time ago but found it
altered the mbr of my second spindle.  I had proof, they denied it, so I
droped it.

Well, the program matured significantly during the past few years, so
if you had given it a try a long time ago, I would suggest you do it
again. I have never had any problems with it, and the support on the
newsgroup is excellent.
