Best freeware music creation software?

I'm playing with psycle right now and I just discovered that I like
this stuff. I'm wondering though what may be the best freeware music
creation software out there?

(PS: and just for an idea, if you know, what is the best paid one - as
in a quality benchmark?)

I haven't got the time to check Psycle out right now, but this
seems more of an electronic music oriented program, right?

In that case, check out Rebirth by Propellerhead software:

http://www.rebirthmuseum.com/

They recently turned it into a freeware download, it basically
emulates a number of classic techno drum machines and synths. It's
LOTS of fun to play with!

Once again, if this is about electronic sequencer-type music, then
Reason is the best thing out there (also by Propellerhead):

http://www.propellerheads.se/index.cfm > click "Reason"

It's the successor to Rebirth, and offers the same interface with
a zillion times more sounds and sequencing possibilities.

If you are interested in combining these sequencing type programs
with real recorded audio tracks in the future, I can tell you that
Reason integrates perfectly with, for instance, Sonar. You can
control Reason from separate MIDI tracks in Sonar, combining them
with audio tracks in any way you want. The Sonar + Reason
combination, to me, is the ultimately flexible solution for this
type of music.

To the rest of the group: sorry for the last two, completely OT
paragraphs.

Wald
