best freeware image/photo editor

Hello all,

I'm looking for a basic freeware photo/image editor for windows XP.

I'm looking for a program with which cropping, auto exposure and basic
drawing (freehand circling stuff in red for example) can be achieved very
easily, and very prefereably WITHOUT any nagging pop-ups asking me the buy
the complete edition of the prog. I'm looking for an authentic freeware, à
la IrfanView.

I have experimenting with a lot of image editor freeware and i'm not at all
impressed with what i've tried so far. I tried Pixia (japanese freeware,
sucks), VCW VicMan (looks good but nagging pop-ups and limited functionality
with the free version), GIMP (best so far but far too complex for what i
want to do).

the ideal software would be something like the $$$ software ACD Systems
Photo Editor (aka FotoCanvas).

It'll do about 90% of the stuff people need from programs like Photoshop but
without the complexity.

Agreed ... PhotoFiltre; but there are other freewares designed to VIEW
your photo collection as well as edit/enhance them as you desire.
XNView, UniView, Image Analyzer from Meesoft, Fast Stone, and Paint Shop
Pro 4.14 ... although this latter one is in a grey area. It was
provided as include-ware in a PC magazine some years back. Careful, the
next version 4.15(also include-ware) did not support .GIF any longer as
did the 4.14.

Now, of all the above, you will likely enjoy Image Analyzer with its
auto-functions of correcting color and exposures, Red Eye correction,
and other features.

Picasa *almost* fits the bill (http://picasa.google.com/). It doesn't
seem to have a "freehand" ability.

Have a look at Picasa 2. It's free and user friendly and I think you will be
impressed.
You can edit the image as much as you want but you can go back months later
and you can still revert to the original should you wish.

I have experimenting with a lot of image editor freeware and i'm not at all
impressed with what i've tried so far. I tried Pixia (japanese freeware,
sucks)...

The user interface has been described as a user interface from Mars.
But it is actually very easy to use, just use a few minutes to look
through
the help file where the interface is explained.

Pixia is very small, it starts extremely fast, it is stable in all
kinds
of windows versions, it is actually usable for creating art, which none
of the photo processing programs are.

They are oriented towards processing and are weak in the paint part of
the program. Pixia runs happily from its own folder, wherever you move
it.
It is portable, small, quick and very capable.

Deep Paint is a freeware paint program in the same class as Corel
Painter, is 50MB unpacked, has crashed a few times in my win98se, but
it is a fantastic program. Mixing beautiful wet shiny colors directly
on the brush, that's cool.
