The DOS variable 'path' is a special one.
When you type, for example, fdisk on the command line,
it will (normally) always start, no matter in what directory you are.
But Fdisk.exe is in some directory that the path is set to (for example
\Windows\Command or \Dos).
If you execute this command: "set path=" you will notice Fdisk will only
start when you're in its directory.
So path tells DOS in which directories to look besides the current one.
Something similiar, if you use Run from your Windows start menu, typing
'sol' will start Solitaire (if sol.exe is in your Windows directory).
And any other .exe, .bat and .com in the Windows-dir can just be started by
typing its filename (with or without extension).

Now anyway, if you want to customize the stuff that loads when Windows
starts, there's lots of freeware for that.
I prefer Startup Changer 2000, it used to be at www.jeffguy.com but the
author cancelled his domain.
I don't know where it can still be downloaded, you can try a Google.
I do have it myself but have deleted the Setup, which includes some
required system files.

Perhaps there's some alternative at pricelessware.org
