must-have freeware

what are the must have freewares for windows xp that i could be
missing out on, with a brief description and links if you can but not
necessarily

i found the following good and useful, to the extent that they've
become part of my windows xp install

- ava find http://www.think-less-do-more.com/avafind/ (excellent,
builds up an index of your files so you can find any file within a
second or two)
- avast antivirus http://www.avast.com/i_idt_153.html (wonderful
antivirus, i don't know if it's better than norton antivirus but i had
the 2002 version of norton antivirus which i've uninstalled and prefer
avast, it guards against p2p viruses and builds a database of your
file to repair them, it can also do a boottime virus search, it also
found many viruses that microtrend failed to find... has anyone found
anything wrong with this one)
- dirms and buzzsaw defragmenters http://www.dirms.com/
and sysinternals pagedefrag
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pagedefrag.shtml (those
three very small defrag tools in combination are better than the
latest professional version of diskeeper 8, dirms is a dos defrag
utility with wonderful options and very very effective, it'll defrag,
compact files, move them according to lcn and according to last
modification date.. etc, buzzsaw defrags on the fly in an idle state
which i found better than diskeeper as diskeeper actually schedules
its defrags and i found interfers with my work even when its priority
set to lowest, diskeeper isn't a true on-the-fly defragmenter, at
least not in my experience, pagedefrag is set on for every reboot i do
and it defrags things such as pagefile and system registery files)
- clipcache the last freeware version (you can find the freeware
version here http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/clipcache.html, this
thing saves a list your clipboard cuts and pastes so you can use them
anytime you want, handy if you cut and paste more than once)
- switch off http://yasoft.km.ru/eng/switchoff/ (switches off
automatically)
- mozilla http://www.mozilla.org/ (i think everyone knows what this
is, i must have it with multizilla and optimoz, i no longer enjoy IE)
- the gimp http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/downloads.html (lovely
once you get used to it)
- rocket.time http://www.rocketsoftware.com/portfolio/rockettime/overview.htm
(syncs your desktop clock to the atomic time, i love in combination
with timecopy for the palm OS which means my vaio and my clie are both
automatically in sync with atomic time)
- kazaa lite k++ with full codecs and BSplayer (eh, you know kazaa
lite k++, BSplayer seems very very nice with the right skin, i like
DVP v3 'cos it's most usable)
- visualboyadvance http://vboy.emuhq.com/ (gameboy advance emulator,
great for playing yoshi's island during those breaks from doing work)
- openoffice.org http://www.openoffice.org/ (what can i say, let's
just say i already have Office XP which i've uninstalled and prefer to
use openoffice.org, i especially like that it's smaller, loads faster,
scrolls faster, smaller files, almost never crashes, more reliable,
and more usable with things such as autocomplete and a great
full-screen mode)

one software that is useful though not freeware is picasa
also, One redeeming factor for being an AOL subscriber is that they
give a version of McAfee personal firewall plus for free, which is the
best personal firewall i've tried but i don't think it's free for
non-aol subscribers

what freeware is a must have that either have become part of your
winxp install or have replaced commercial software you had, or is just
simply good that i could be missing out on

PFE - Programmers File Editor (not just for programmers!).
I've used it for years, since the 16-bit version with Windows 3.1. Now
using 32-bit version with Win2k/Win98, for 99pst of my editing.
Development ended in 2000, but never mind - as long as it works and it
still is simply the "best" - in *my* opinion. But preferences differ -
you may or may hot like it. If you do try it - be sure to have a look
"under the hood" if you do (configurable).

i found the following good and useful, to the extent that they've

Some of my favorites

Polder Backup - I decided on this backup program after trying several this
past summer.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~philippo/PolderBackup.htm

Total Uninstall - I wouldn't even dream of installing a program without it.
http://www.geocities.com/ggmartau/projects/projects.html

Yankee Clipper III - In my opinion this is the best clipboard extender.
http://www.yankee-clipper.net/content/download.htm

SpywareBlaster - Prevents Active X malware programs from installing
themselves on your computer
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpyBot Search & Destroy - The best tool for removing spyware from your
computer.
http://www.safer-networking.org/

PIN's - An excellent program for creating and storing passwords.
http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/pins.html

Slick Run - Not exactly a must have for everyone. This command-line tool is
my favorite way of navigating around my computer. I prefer this method, to
using keyboard shortcuts.

missing out on, with a brief description and links if you can. [snip]

HTTrack 3.3 For grabbing an entire URL, complete with pix. Maybe
unethical for some since it may also grab for download
some otherwise "for sale" programs or other files.

ASPack 1.06 Freeware .EXE & .DLL cruncher .. when space is at
a premium, say on a floppy or on your thumbdrive.

CutePDF Freeware printer driver that produces .PDF files from
anything you can produce with, say ... MSWord.
Results
are imminently readable with any Acrobat Reader.

Juno 5 Traveling? Keep JUNO on your laptop, and set it up
anywhere on the road where you can find a local
telephone
number for Juno. Import your account from home, and
....
voila! Email & limited Web are free. And .. if you
have
another WebEmail account somewhere, just pop up your
MSIE and go get your regular mail .. using Juno's
free access.

Lister A tiny thingie which will open and 'read' any kind of
file
without being bugged with a prompt that the
extension is
not recognized, or "whadya want to read this with
...?"

MenuEdit A right-click editor which permits user to add anything to
the right-click options of Open With .....

TxtPrint Freeware printer driver permitting 2-up, 4-up, or 8-up
pages on one sheet. A sort of miniature FinePrint.

NISTime32 From www.jeditec.com. Written expressly for WWV.
Reset your computer clock up-to-date from any of
several atomic clocks.

XNews Like Outlook Express, it will permit assembling several
binary parts at once. But, XNews is better ... and
it
supports the yEnc compression engine.

Solitude LOTTSA solitare games ... for free. Not just the most
popular five, either .. but hundreds!

e_Sword Most comprehensive of all the freeware Bible study
compilations, even better than many (maybe most)
commercial enterprises.

Catrain 1.82 Freeware french effort. A doozy of a railyard game. Several
types of engines, and routes. Just like playing
with real table
top train sets. Hard to locate.

CDXtreme Sony freeware, still found on several sites. It will work
alone,
with using your MSCDEX.EXE method,
but suggest also downloading the Veritas PX engine
in case you
prefer ASPI support (faster)

Draw4Children Got kids or grandkids of the crayon age? A perfect freebie
for drawing and coloring and saving pictures.

IomegaPhoto Great for positioning one or several of your .JPGs on a single
Printer sheet of paper. Pix can be all the same, all
different, all
different sizes, etc. My favorite is getting a page
of wallets
from one Olin Mill proof shot. Is that cheating?

JohnnyCastaway The most successful and hilarious ScreenSaver to ever
hit the market. Now freeware, downloaded from:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/screensavers1/johnnycastaway.htm
XP Users need to perform a simple trick to get
Johnny to work,
http://web.onetel.net.uk/~gnudawn/johnny/johhny.zip

RestoreNoMore ME users sick and tired of the HUMONGOUS amount of
disk space being eaten up with the monstrous,
useless premise?
You can stop the Restore premise in ME, but
getting rid of
the residue is a PITA!

Simple OCR A printer drive that permits your ordinary flat bed scanner
to
turn a page from a book or magazine into a text
file. It works
with a decently high percentage of accuracy,
depending on how
clear and forthright the original page. Straight
book pages are
a snap.

Paster 2 Here's what the old URL said:

The Paster 2.0

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

A useful clipboard management tool. Collects all items sent to the
clipboard, and allows you to select and paste them easily from within
another apps. Load/save of cliplist also

I downloaded, and have been using this program for a long time. Nowhere in
the
installed program is there a mention of registering or price ... and it
keeps on working.
It says Freeware, but a Price of $10.00 ? You figure that one out. Maybe
they meant
a donation was requested?
