Best free Virtual CD for XP?

K

I' am look for suggestions as to the best virtual CD program/driver for XP for my use. I have an
old spelling program "American Heritage Dictionary for Windows" that runs fine under Win 95,98 SE
using a redirect to the voice pronunciation files in the ahd3.ini file. The program runs under XP
but I can't get it to auto pronounce the words using the voice files copied to the hd, it works
fine off the cd. Any suggestions?

Daemon-Tools (www.daemon-tools.cc)

I prefer and have stuck with the older version (3.47). The newer 4.x
version has ad-ware. They state:

"This version has an option to install client-side software applications
(DAEMON Tools Searchbar and Save Now) that deliver a limited number of
behaviorally targeted and contextually relevant coupons, ads and
comparative shopping results directly to consumers desktops - without
compromising the privacy, security or smooth functioning of peoples
computers!"

They *say* it is optional. If optional, it is likely that the "option"
is enabled by default so most users would end up installing the ad-ware.
I don't like any free software that comes bundled with ad-ware (because
then it really isn't free as the author is looking to offset his costs
by snagging some users in his affiliated advertising that kicks him back
some money). If he wants donations, he should ask for those. I haven't
found a release or revision history page that might list what
oh-so-wonderful advantages there are to the 4.x version over the 3.x
version that would lure me into getting the 4.x version that is bundled
with ad-ware.

While I very much like Daemon-Tools, I'm disappointed the author went to
the ad-ware route to recoup his costs, especially since he is gearing up
for a *commercial* "Pro" version. You will need CD burning software
that can create an image file (several formats are supported) from the
CDs/DVDs that you can then store on your hard drive and have
Daemon-Tools load using virtual CD/DVD drives. The old 3.x version had
a limit of 4 virtual CD/DVD drives. I don't know if the count improved
in the new 4.x version (another reason why a release history page would
be helpful). Their online help page doesn't mention the maximum number
of virtual drives. From their Announcements forum, it looks like 4.x
still only supports a max of 4 virtual drives, but that may be enough
for you to have available all at the same time. You can, for example,
change which image file a virtual drive uses to switch between them but
that is a manual switch. Having more virtual drives would be more
handy.

The proper signature delimiter line, also referred to as the sigdash
line, is "-- \n" (dash, dash, space, newline), not a row of asterisks.
Something is not configured correctly in your Forte Agent.

Try Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%.

Alcohol 54%/120% are not free as per the requirement mentioned in the
Subject header. Damon-Tools (non-Pro version) is free but the latest
version is bundled with adware.

You have to know where to look but you can find free links.

The licensing from the author doesn't change regardless of where you
download the product, even from warez sites (where you deserve to get
infected with the malware-laden version of the product, if you get the
product at all). Similarly, "You have to know how to rob but you can
find free money."
