satisfactorily.
Some say AVG is as good or better, but no McAfee for me.
If you google for it you may find something entirely different.

Many will insist you avoid Norton or McAfee (even if gotten for free.)
About the same number will tell you not to go with any all-in-one suites.

The free ones that are decent in my mind:
Avira
Avast
AVG (when installed custom, minimizing what gets installed.)

For "cost" - eSet NOD32 - AV only. $60/2 years.

In my View, McAfee, along with Norton, is among the worst anti-virus
programs available.

For an anti-virus program, I recommend eSet NOD32, if you are willing
to pay for it. If you want a free anti-virus, I recommend one of the
following three:

Avast
Microsoft Security Essentials

You also need anti-spyware software. I recommend that you download and
install (both freeware) MalwareBytes AntiMalware *and*
SuperAntiSpyware.

Many claim the same,but eventually Norton and MacAfee will hit hard. It is playing
Russian roulette with those two. I am telling you this from experience in answering
posts over a period of 17 years. Issue with them is very high. Some get away without
issues for years but eventually it will hit

I agree. One caveat though, I did a custom install so that I had
better control of what was going to happen with the program. Changing
some of the defaults in the setup was done as well.

Very useful.

It also can provide for a preview to help allay readers' fears of poisoned

There are other sites that are similar, and there are, I believe, plug-ins
for some browsers to preview links more easily.

There are many.. Microsoft security essentials for some. Avira or Avast or
even Avg for still others. I have used most of these but I now use Vipre
from Sunbelt software.runs about 19.95 a year or I believe 39.95 for
unlimited home license (all your computers) great program and definitions
are updated frequently never had a problem or a slowdown from it. Stay away
from large system robbing pigs like Norton or Mcafee!

If you opt for Norton, be sure you intend to keep it. Removing Norton can
be a major PITA in my experience.

I used AVG for years until it became too intrusive on my surfing and
switched to Avast which works really well.

It's not free, but it's darn cheap on Ebay or Amazon.com for OEM version
(OEM means no manual, no fancy box just a DISK) and $20 pays for THREE
computers on which it can be installed.

Remember you get what you pay for.
If Antivirus is free, you pay nothing for it, can you guess what you get
back?
Think hard.

Get Norton.
or stay with AVG and other free crap.

Free doesn't necessarily equate to 'crap'. Just one example:

good as or better than their paid counterparts.
