Being on my wireless network slows down opening files and pictures

Hello, all.

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 with an Intel 3.4MHz Pentium 4 processor and 1
GB of RAM, running Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2, and automatically
update all. I have a home wireless network with another Dell desktop, as
well as a Dell laptop. I connect to this network with a USB network adapter
from Dell.

Here is my problem. When I am connected to my wireless network (whether on
the Internet or not), and I try to open up a Word/Excel/Powerpoint file or a
file such as JPEG, I get an hourglass, and a long time before the file opens.
This is also true if I right click on my mouse for menu choices. However,
if I disable my wireless USB network adapter, these issues disappear, and I
can open these files instantaneously. This is not an issue with my other
networked computers.

Dell sent a new adapter which did not make a difference. Upgrading the
driver for the adapter did not help. I've been advised that re-installing
Windows will solve "all of my problems." I wish!

Any thoughts out there on other solutions? I regularly run McAfee antivirus
software and anti-spyware (Webroot's SpySweeper).

Thank you in advance for your help!

When you are using the wireless network, press ctrl+alt+del to bring up the
tasks manager and monitor the processor's performance under performance tab.
If it's unusually high, check the processes tab to see a list of processes,
sort them by processor usage (just click on CPU column header) and see what
process consumes most of the resources.....

Please reply with that process name and we can sort things out from there.

Wishes,
Sidd.

Thank you both!

I actually was able to solve this problem using RegScan to find entries in
my Registry that had data beginning with \\. There were 5 such reference
which, when deleted, restored my system to normal function!
