Beginners Questions

I'm new to Frontpage so I've got some, what will probably be, pretty dumb
questions.

First, how do you post folders of pictures using FP? I've seen some
software called JAlbum. Looks pretty neat, but I don't see how you'd post
anything using FP. I did see a page where you can upload thru FTP.

Next question:
What is FTP and how do you use it? Do, or should I use, FTP with FP?

Are the two compatible?

That's starter questions. Anyone who cares to help me I thank in advance.
Please be aware I'm slow at learning but hopefully I will pick it up.

Answers to your questions in line below. I'll try to be clear, but please
post back with any further questions or clarification to my explanations.

J-Album is an application to easily create a photo gallery for the internet.
You would create the album, import the files into Frontpage web. I expect
J-Album itself has instructions on how to integrate it with and publish it
with Frontpage.

Next question:
What is FTP and how do you use it? Do, or should I use, FTP with FP?

FTP - File Transfer Protocol. You need an application such as "Cute FTP"
or "WS_FTP" - shareware applications like these are readily available on
the internet from sites such as www.tucows.com

If you use the frontpage server extensions, do not use FTP to upload the
site; if you use Frontpage with the *frontpage server extensions*, you will
need to use HTTP mode with Frontpage. You might need to do some research on
this, either through Frontpage's help files or the microsoft.com
knowledgebase.

Are the two compatible?

Yes, you can use both methods to publish your site; but Frontpage has
special server extensions which requires HTTP mode to publish a site.

Frontpage is a *web site management* tool in addition to being a HTML
editor; unlike publishing by FTP, Frontpage assists in many ways like
tracking changed files, and the ability to publish only changed files.
Where with FTP it is up to you to know what files you want to publish by
noting 'last changed dates' etc, Frontpage knows this by default

Frontpage manages a web site as a whole, rather than a bunch of individual
files (as with FTP).

Frontpage *does* have an FTP mode which can be used *if* you don't use any
features requiring the FP server extensions. (many features do use them),
or use another FTP program like Cute_FTP.

If you are an experienced programmer you might be able to "pick" your way
through FrontPage, but it's a lot faster and easier if you have some step by
step examples to follow.

I would suggest you look into the "Dummies" series published by IDG Books or
"Idiots" series published by Alpha Books.

When (or if) you buy any books, I would suggest looking for the one which
covers the basics but does not go to excruciatingly deep into the zillions
of options.

Actually, I'd take a different approach.

Put FP aside for two months. Learn everything you can about HTML and CSS.
At the end of that time, you'll be writing the FP books, not reading them.
