Begin numbering on page 3

M

MargaretA

I want to begin page numbering to begin at "1" on my actual page 3. I have a
section break after the first page, and a section break after the second
page. I do not want the actual first and second pages to be counted in the
total.

NOTE: I really have 14 pages. I don't want to count real pages 1 and 2. I
want to begin numbering (Page 1 of 12) on my actual page 3; and I want the
very last page to be numbered "Page 12 of 12". If this can be done at all,
please let me know how. I've wasted WAY more than an hr. trying to figure
this out.

Thanks VERY much for all sound advice! :)

We have tried many ways to deal with this problem, I do not think it can be
done within one document.

We have two methods:
Create two documents with cover and title pages, and another with content,
then PDF it together when finished
-or-
put the cover and title pages at the end of the document to keep it all in
one file

1. View | Header and Footer. This will open the header pane and display the
Header and Footer toolbar.

2. If you want the page number in the footer instead, use the Switch
Between Header and Footer button to get to the footer.

3. Use Show Next to get to the header/footer for section 3.

4. Click the Same as Previous or Link to Previous button to unlink this
section from the previous one(s).

5. Use the Insert Page Number button to insert your page number (or you can
insert the AutoText field "Page X of Y").

6. Use Format Page Number to set the starting number at 1 in Section 3.

7. If you used Insert Page Number instead of "Page X of Y," add desired text
and use the Insert Number of Pages button to insert the NUMPAGES field. You
should see Page 1 of 14.

8. Press Alt+F9 to display field codes. You should see Page { PAGE } of {
NUMPAGES}.

9. Type an equals sign in front of the NUMPAGES field and -2 after it; it
will then look like this:

Page { PAGE } of = { NUMPAGES } -2

10. Select everything from the = sign to the 2 and press Ctrl+F9, creating a
new field.

11. Press Alt+F9 to toggle fields and F9 to update them. You should see Page
1 of 12.
