Beeping noises

Recently I have been hearing a faint beeping noise as I move from one window
to another. I have never experienced this problem before. My virus
protection is up to date and I do have spyware detection software installed.
I have heard so much about key-loggers, that is spyware that traces your
keystrokes and it concerns me.
I would appreciate any comments on this issue. my OS is Windows XP Home.

Hi,

Control Panel/Sounds and Audio/Sounds tab, near the bottom look at the
sounds for various events. You may have enabled a sound for selecting or
something similar. Click on the various events that are sound enabled and
the test button to see if you can replicate the beep you are hearing.

Thanks Rick, I have checked every event in the sound properties and there
are no events that have a sound assigned. I am bewildered as to what else
could be causing this. the computer is working fine but the beeping sound is
annoying.

It could be the "Beep on Error" function of XP. Some sound cards have
a Volume Slider for "Beep". You might check your Volume control and
if beep is present, click the Mute checkbox.

Otherwise download Tweak-UI for XP & under General, untic the option
"Beep on errors".

It could also be the noise from an old sound card in an old machine. I
had a client's machine that would make a little beep every time you
moved the mouse. I put the sound card in a different slot and that
helped somewhat, but it was just a cheap and poorly-made case. Mr.
Mahan - what changed between the time things worked and the time they
didn't?

I downloaded the Tweak UI utility as suggested and unchecked the "beep on
errors" box but the beeping noise is still there. On closer inspection the
noise seems to be coming from the processor and not the sound card. I guess
I'll just put up with it until a solution comes along. the desktop computer
is about four years old and possibly has outlived it's usefullness.

1. The faint beeping noise you hear is NOT a "beep on errors" thing.
2. It's NOT coming from the processor, but it may be coming from the
speaker inside your computer.

If the noise is coming from the processor area, then it must be coming
from the fan on the processor since cpu's don't make any noise by
themselves. All you need to do in that case is replace the fan. If you
are uncomfortable working inside your machine, take it to a computer
repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA) and have them
replace the fan for you.
