Beep & Shutdown problem

I have XP Home SP 1. Three times this week, the computer hangs,
then I hear a "beep," and it's frozen. Control+Alt+Delete won't work.
I can't even shut it down by doing that twice.

I have to hold the power button in and shut the computer down
that way.

When I start it up again, I get a message that Windows recovered
from a device failure. I'd like to know what could be causing this,
and how to fix it.

Hard to say,the power supply might be,this needs to be tested at a computer
service center, remove from computer,it takes 5 minutes or so.Memory is
usually the problem,or the controller,to test, download the utility and
install to
a MS-DOS formatted floppy,boot to floppy.Download from:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp Video card,or the board itself......

Sounds like the Hard Disk is on it's way out... The freeze is caused when
the hard disk stops spinning..

I suggest backing-up all crytical information on the drive and replace it
before it's too late***
