1-2-2 DMA failure The DMA controller has failed. Replace the IC if
possible

Does IC mean the motherboard?

I am pretty sure the user pulled RAM out of the machine while it was
still on.

I tried moving ram around, and tried different ram. No cigar.

Is this person's P4 2.4Ghz ready for the landfill?

IC means a chip on the mobo. Just as likely to be peripheral parts (on
the mobo) as the IC itself. In short, yes, it wont be much use.

George..... sounds like toast but you should tell the user that this
code is part of the:

ID
Ten
T
series of error codes (Id10t) <g>

No, But for practical purposes, it's close enough. Desoldering is not
for the faint of heart, or the shallow of pocket.

May or may not have killed it. It's possible to smoke the ram, and the
memory controller, but.... You can get away with this sort of thing,
much more often than not.

By no means. It just needs a new motherboard, maybe new ram, too. (test
the ram in another machine) You should be able to order a compatable
replacement. If you get the same model, you won't even need to do a
repair install.

No. It refers to the DMA controller chip, if it is in fact a separate chip. Note the phrase "if possible". The DMA controller could be part of another chip, or it could be several chips. Unless you have a schematic of the motherboard and are experienced at troubleshooting and repairing circuit boards you should replace the whole motherboard.
