Becoming an administrator

There are several programs we have tried to install --
the latest being Norton Anti-Virus. Apparently with
Windows XP, we have to be an Administrator to be able to
fully download and activate the Norton product. What do
I have to do to become an administrator?

Also, with the Norton AV program, our system will not
connect with the Symantec server. Will it connect once
we get the Administrator issue resolved, or is there
something else we need to do to connect with their server?

Thanks for your help!

.
To be an administrator of your local pc you have to log
on to the pc locally with the administrator username and
password (if you have it!) then you go to groups and add
your username to the administrators group.
