battery not charging

my battery is not charging . It says it is but it stays on zero and never
moves. If I unplug the ac power the computer shuts off. Does my battery needs
to be replaced? It is about 4 yrs ol,d but I hardly use my computer without
ac power.
I tried testing the battery but the computer shuts down. Does the computer
needs a battery to operate? Can it operate on ac power alone?

Hi,

There should be a charging indicator light on the notebook. If it
indicates that the battery is being charged, then it is probably the
battery.

Most laptop NiMh batteries contain a "smart" internal charge record. If you
don't let the battery run down to almost empty each time, but, instead keep
plugging it back in at 80% or 70% discharged, it will "remember" this as a
charge cycle. Most laptop batteries keep track of charge cycles and when the
reach a maximum won't take a charge again. I would imagine that after 4
years your battery has reached it's useful life.

Some laptops (check your user manual) will run just fine on AC power without
the battery in it's holder. When you're going to use it on AC - just slip
the battery out.

Most of all, let the battery run through it's full cycle from full to empty.
The battery monitor will (or should, if you've enabled it) tell you with
voice and pop-up that your battery is nearing 5 or 10% left.

That's great, but nearly all laptops use lithium ion cells nowadays - a
completely different animal.

My Windows XP Battery Optimizer Program gives me an Error: Communicate with
battery failed. This is the second replacement battery I've purchased. No
problems with the other lithium batteries.... I am running a Compaq Presario
notebook model 2110US. I am positive the battery is good and correct. The
only difference is that this battery was manufactured by Dynapack and the
other two were by Motorola and Simplo.....all for HP with a part number of
f4809a/f4812a. Has anyone out there encountered this problem. Thanks in
advance, BillyB
