Access helper

I have Windows XP Home Edition on my home PC but that does not include
Access (I have Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.).

I want to put Access on my PC. Can anybody advise on this in terms of:

a)Is it ok to put on my home PC
b)What edition do I need 2000, 2003
c)Anything else I might want to consider.

My motivation for the above is that i use Excel to keep large amounts of
data but I think that using a bona fide database would help me query that
data much more quickly.

Regards

Alex

a) Yes
b) I would recommend 2002 (XP) or 2003
c) You can buy the upgrade version of Access. I would go for the newest
version. 2003 will run on Windows XP.
If you don't have at least 512 MB RAM, I would increase to that or more
depending on what you're going to be doing.

Hmm, thanks Doug. It makes me wonder if that's a typo. IIRC, in previous
versions any copy of any of the Office programs was sufficient for the
upgrade. I wonder what the box says?

Someone posted the following in m.p.a.devtoolkits the other day, leading me
to believe that the information at the Microsoft site is accurate:
Has anyone had problems loading Access 2003
upgrade?
I keep getting an "Error 1608" which states that I do
not have Office XP loaded. This is silly, as we have
Office 2003 loaded and yet the program will not
recognize the load.

Strange. In the past the upgrade was always available as an add-on to
another Office version install as well. It becomes even more strange if the
Office 2003 license is like the WinXP license in that it will let you use
the current or an older version until you're ready to upgrade. If it is,
install Office XP, install the Access 2003 upgrade, then install Office 2003
Standard and I'm guessing it'll all work.

Actually, if the above scenario will work (i.e. is legal), you wouldn't even
have to install Office XP, just have the disk available during the Access
install as proof of the previous version.
