basic how-to for connecting pc and mac

Hi there!
Are there some basic instructions for setting up a pc-mac connection with an
ethernet cross-over cable and no third-party software? I've got win 2000 and
mac OS9 (I know is easy with OS10 but I'm determined to get OS9 to work).

Easiest quick 'n dirty is run an FTP server on one machine & use an
FTP client on the other.
