Bandwidth Limit Freeware

Hi all.
I need a freeware to set a max bandwidth for application.
I've heard of Netlimiter and Netpeeker, but they are payware... any
freeware out there?

Thanks.

If you run a router you may not need software. Some routers can limit
bandwidth.

Netlimiter is a great program.. I am waiting for them to add
"priority" bandwidth throttling...
Alas its not free....

I am afraid that you wont find something free that comes even close
to netlimiter (or netpeeker)... at least for now.

Before netlimiter existed and I was on a dialup modem...
I was imagining the existance of such a program...
and I never found one.. I cant understand why they took so long to make one.
When I say "they" I mean the programmers of the world.

I'm going to give a bit of a nerdy answer (look at me, I'm so 1337 ;) )
which is probably entirely useless for practical purposes ... but I
believe that you can do all sorts of weird and wonderful traffic shaping
with Linux. I can't remember *how*, but I'm sure it can be done.

Mark,

what Al said is wrong (as usual), and what you are saying is not possible
for the exact
thing netlimiter does.

Netlimiter must have direct contact with an app, meaning that is loaded in
the OS,
you see it on a list and you give it bandwidth or limit it.

The other solutions may be able to limit ports perhaps.. but lots of
programs
change ports, or many programs share ports...

There are network shapers as you say (I have seen them) but this is a
different thing...
and you cannot use a router or linux to achieve the same results.

Hi.. have never seen that.. can you explain the "Ill get me a coat?" :)

A character played by Mark Williams in the Fast Show (UK comedy).
Usually, there is a group having a conversation. After having remained
quiet for some time, the character will say something silly, there is an
embarassed silence, and then he states "I'll get me [sic] coat".

At:

they say it best:
"I'll get me coat" is one of the many straplines from sketches in The
Fast Show. It refers to the speaker's realisation that he has just
embarrassed both himself and the people he is with, so it's time he left."

Tell that to Cisco. The Linksys WRT54G does limiting under
Applications & Gaming/QoS. You can limit by port ...

or by MAC address or LAN socket, which programs can't change. And
I've never seen a program written to change port based on bandwidth it
finds available. Care to name one?
and you cannot use a router or linux to achieve the same results.

Exactly the same, no - but you can limit bandwidth with some routers.
You'll notice that 9ust4v0 didn't ask if there was a program to do
exactly what Netlimiter does - he asked if there was a program to
limit specific apps - and some routers can.

But you had to use the thread as an opportunity to say I was wrong,
didn't you, John? Even if your "argument" is so specious that it has
nothing to do with reality.

John Jay,

We're talking about Netlimiter Client FREE, right? I have it running for
about two months now, am very pleased with the application based stats it
offers, however limiting an application's bandwidth is not one of the
options the free client offers IMO.

Right-clicking an application in the "on-line" list gives you the following
options:

* Create Process,
* Move to hidden,
* Show Application's Name (with sub menu)
* Show Stats
* About (Netlimiter)
* Update registration (get the paid pro version, that is)

Now, if you have a way of limiting the BW with the free edition, then
please share it with us, as I think more users of the program will be
interested in this feature.

no he wanted a program that had the limiting function of the applications he
mentioned...
that were not free.....

Hi John Jay,

Thanks for clarifying this!

Thanks all for the answers...

It was my bad not saying that I'm using XP (so no linux solutions for
me), I got no router (specially an xpensive Cisco) and of course I
don't want to pay for software (even if it's cheap) ...

I guess this story won't have a happy ending :(

Thnaks anyway for your answers :)

If I find a freeware I will post it here for you

I am looking for a free alternative also...

Speaking of people being wrong, John ...

Or does "freeware" mean "stuff you pay for"?

If you have a spare computer, even an old P2 or P3, Freesco is free
for the download, runs off a floppy (you don't even need a hard drive
in the computer to run it), and is a Linux router. Not exactly what
you're looking for, but someone reading the thread might consider it a
solution for him.
I got no router (specially an xpensive Cisco)

"Cisco", these days, includes Linksys, which is pretty cheap. Not
free, of course, which is what you're looking for, but many people who
have routers have Linksys WRT54Gs, which do allow for some bandwidth
limiting, which is the only reason I mentioned it. "I already have
it" is, of course, very cheap.
